Notable Favorability Gap Between 2024 Vice Presidential Nominees: Walz Surges Ahead of Vance

A new Ipsos poll, released on Tuesday, has highlighted a significant gap in favorability between the 2024 vice presidential nominees. The poll shows Minnesota Governor Tim Walz gaining ground, with his favorability rating increasing from 39 percent on August 13 to 42 percent after the Democratic National Convention. In contrast, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, has maintained a steady 32 percent favorability rating since early August.

The 10-point favorability split between Walz and Vance demonstrates the potential boost Walz could bring to Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign. This boost was further emphasized by Walz’s participation in Harris’s first and only sit-down interview since she entered the race in late July.

Despite the favorability gap, experts caution that the influence of vice presidential candidates on the overall election outcome may be limited. The Influence of Vice Presidential Candidates in Presidential Elections, noted that it is common for vice presidential nominees to be less popular than the presidential candidates themselves. “They’re really popular within their own party,” Devine said, adding that running mates often serve to solidify support within the party base rather than attract broad appeal.

Both Walz and Vance share similarities in their backgrounds, which may appeal to working-class voters. They are both white men from the Midwest with blue-collar roots—Walz is a former school teacher and Army veteran, while Vance is a Marine veteran, author, and venture capitalist.

The new polling data also reveals that a significant portion of voters remain undecided about the vice presidential nominees, with approximately one in four respondents not prepared to express an opinion on either candidate.

Another key finding from the poll is the public’s perception of the nominees’ readiness to assume the presidency if needed. Forty-nine percent of Americans are “confident” that Walz could step into the role of president, compared to 41 percent for Vance. This difference may be attributed to Walz’s extensive experience in public office, including his time as a U.S. Representative and Governor of Minnesota, compared to Vance’s relatively recent entry into politics as a U.S. Senator.

As the 2024 election season continues to unfold, the impact of the vice presidential nominees on their respective campaigns will be closely watched, even if the general consensus remains that the top of the ticket ultimately drives the outcome.
