C Lalchhandami Resigns as Chairperson of Mizoram State Commission for Women Amid Age Limit Controversy
Aizawl, Mizoram – C Lalchhandami has stepped down as the chairperson of the Mizoram State Commission for Women (MSCW) following protests by the opposition party, Mizo National Front (MNF), which cited an age bar against her appointment. An official confirmed that she submitted her resignation to the Social Welfare Department secretary on Saturday.
The MNF had been pressing for Lalchhandami’s resignation, claiming that she had crossed the legal age limit for the role. According to the Mizoram State Commission for Women Act, 2004, individuals older than 65 cannot be appointed as chairperson. The MNF, which had filed a police complaint regarding her appointment, demanded her resignation by September 9.
In her resignation letter, Lalchhandami stated that she had not yet reached the age of 65 and could have legally continued in her role. However, she chose to resign to protect the commission’s reputation and avoid further political conflict. Lalchhandami explained that the issue had turned into a political vendetta, making it difficult for her to continue her work enthusiastically.
During her five-month tenure, Lalchhandami claimed the commission had heard over 100 cases, surpassing the 86 cases handled from May 2019 to February 2024. She stated that 80% of the cases had been amicably resolved, highlighting the commission’s effectiveness under her leadership.
Social Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii defended the government’s decision to appoint Lalchhandami, stating that her birth certificate, which indicated she was born in 1960, made her eligible for the position. The government accepted this documentation when appointing her as the MSCW chairperson in March.
Lalchhandami’s resignation marks the end of a brief yet impactful tenure at the helm of the Mizoram State Commission for Women.
