Mhow Crime: 3 Arrested for Assault on Army Officers and Rape of Woman Near Mhow Jam Gate, Madhya Pradesh
Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, September 13, 2024 – In a chilling incident that occurred near the popular Jam Gate tourist spot, three men have been arrested for allegedly assaulting two Army officers and raping their woman friend on the night of September 10. The police confirmed that the men were drawn to the picnic spot after hearing loud music played by the victims, who were spending time in the secluded area around midnight.
Jam Gate, located approximately 30 kilometers from the Mhow military cantonment, is a scenic location in the Vindhyachal ranges, frequented by tourists during the day but often deserted at night. On Tuesday night, two Army officers, aged 23 and 24, were at the spot with their two women friends, reportedly listening to loud music since 11 pm.
At around 2 am, six men, armed with a pistol and sticks, reached the spot after hearing the music. They attacked the group, holding one of the couples hostage while demanding ₹10 lakh from the other couple for their release.
Superintendent of Police (Rural) Hitika Vasal stated that as soon as the incident was reported, police rushed to the scene. However, the attackers managed to flee upon noticing the police vehicle’s headlights. Despite this, police teams have arrested three of the six accused and are conducting raids to capture the remaining three. A reward of ₹10,000 has been announced for information leading to their arrest.
Vasal confirmed that two of the three arrested men are currently in police custody and are being interrogated. The hunt for the remaining suspects continues.
The attack began when the accused spotted one officer and his female friend sitting in a car. The other officer and his woman friend, who were on a nearby hilltop, arrived at the scene after hearing the commotion. One of the attackers threatened the victims with a pistol, while others used sticks to assault the officers and the women.
The victims were taken to the Mhow civil hospital, where a medical examination confirmed that one of the women had been raped. The other officer and his woman friend escaped physical harm but were severely shaken by the ordeal.
The police have registered a case under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 70 (gang rape), 310-2 (dacoity), 308-2 (extortion), and 115-2 (voluntarily causing hurt), along with sections under the Arms Act. The woman who was allegedly raped is in a state of shock and has not yet been able to record her statement.
Police are working to collect further evidence, and authorities have dismissed rumors circulating on social media that the officers and women met through a dating app.
The horrifying incident has raised concerns about safety in remote tourist spots like Jam Gate, especially during the night. Local authorities have increased patrols in the area to prevent future incidents. The remaining suspects are still on the run, and police are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in their capture.
